Stock car racing roots run deep in the city of Miramichi, New Brunswick. The storied tradition and favorite pastime will continue on for generations, as a new era gets ushered into the sports storied history as the city’s paved asphalt oval will be under operation from a new ownership group for 2025 and beyond.
The ⅓ mile oval - formerly known as Speedway Miramichi - has been sold to Tracadie, New Brunswick’s Rosa Robichaud, effective for the 2025 season. With Robichaud taking ownership, Glen Sherrard has been appointed to take the reins overseeing day to day operations. The new management assumes ownership from Barry Richard, who has operated the venue since 2015.
The new team is committed to maintaining the region's rich motorsports history, unique racing culture, all while revitalizing one of Eastern Canada’s most historic stock car racing facilities. Effort at the facility has already been evident, with upgrades underway including grandstand replacement, facility cleanup, fencing repairs, and wall repairs. With a busy and hard working spring, the team is grinding to prepare for opening day.
Robichaud hails from nearby Tracadie, and is an adoptive mother who is employed at a local tattoo studio. Robichaud has been a long-time and devoted supporter of action at the speedway, and is excited to bring action to the speedway for many years to come.
Sherrard, who hails from Miramichi, has a background in heavy equipment mechanics and the local entertainment industry and is also a longtime fan of the speedway who is looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.
“It’s been a busy spring, but we have a great team that has been working hard to get ready to bring new life to the speedway,” said Sherrard. “We have been hoping to get the ball rolling, and we are hoping to see everyone for our first event coming up on July 5th.”
“We’re excited to meet and interact with all the loyal fans and drivers, and get the opportunity to expand this incredible little track we are so fortunate to have in our hometown.”
For Barry Richard and family, the transition is bittersweet after a decade at the helm of the facility.
“I’m thankful for the last ten years here at the speedway. Many memories have been made, and many friendships as well,” said Richard. “The time has come to move on, and the new team are the right ones for the job. I wish them nothing but success at the speedway for many years to come.”
Going forward, the facility will be known as R&R Speedway. An updated schedule is being released with the first event featuring stock car racing and Demolition action slated for Saturday July 5th. The new team is committed to growing and expanding the motorsports footprint at the facility, including a trio of tough truck events on the calendar, with additional events such as lawn tractor racing to be announced.
Miramichi’s Rich Racing History
Robichaud and Sherrard will add their name to management groups who have oversaw operation of the venue over the fifty-seven year history of the speedway. Racing began in the region in the mid-1960’s on dirt - with tracks such as Lion’s Speedway in Douglasfield, Hillcrest Speedway in Douglastown (near the modern day facility) and the Chatham Exhibition all hosting events.
For 1968, a group led by James Quinn spearheaded efforts to bring a permanent paved facility to the region - known at the time as Miramichi Speedway. After a few seasons, the track would have legendary Maritime promoter Ernie MacLean at the helm through 1973 and 1974.
Following 1974, the track would sit dormant until 1983 when Sportsman competitor Pierre Allain reopened the facility on a lease as Douglastown Raceway. Over the years to come, ownership would change hands several times between Allain, Frank Williston, and Lindsay Tozer. For 1988, Clarence Patles and Wilfred MacKay assumed the ownership roles, and would hang on until 1994. That year Brad Mann would become an owner of the track, followed by Reg Tozer in 1995. The Tozer family owns the record for longest tenure - during which time the track was known as Miramichi City Speedway - operating until the end of 2011 when Jason Carnahan and David Neilsen purchased the facility and began the Speedway Miramichi era. Carnahan would sell to Barry Richard, who has operated the facility up until this past year, in 2015.
Updated 2025 Schedule
To juggle the ongoing upgrades and ownership transition, an updated calendar of events is being released - which sees a few changes and several additions. Popular Stock Car racing and Demolition events will be held on July 5th, July 26th, August 16th, September 6th, and October 25th - in addition to the return of The Very Best Fall Shootout on the weekend of October 4th. Popular events such as Kids Day and the Figure 8 Trailer Race will return on August 16th and September 6th respectively. A first time feature - Power Wheels Racing - will be featured as part of the Kid’s Day card.
A trio of tough truck events - first of their kind at the speedway - will be held on July 19th, August 9th, and September 20th.
